Congratulations and welcome to the University of Minnesota Law School. The information on this page will help make sure that you have a smooth transition into the role of a U of M Law School student.
New students should activate their U of M email account immediately, in order to ensure timely receipt of financial aid information and other announcements from the University and the Law School. Your U of M email account is the official line of communication for all messages from the Law School, and you are responsible for reading all messages in a timely fashion.
The basic instructions for activating and logging into your email account have been provided in the admittance packet sent from the Admissions Office. Or, go to https://www.umn.edu/initiate and follow the instructions. The ID number you need to use to initiate your account is your U of M student ID number, which was provided in your admittance packet.
If you experience problems with the setup (or if you were previously a U of M student and want to be sure you don't need to do anything else to activate
your account), please contact the U of M account Help Line at 612-301-4357, or visit www.umn.edu/adcs.
If you've tried the Help Line and still have problems, then please contact the Admissions Office.
Your U of M email account is associated with your U of M Internet account (sometimes referred to as your X.500 ID), which provides you with access to many of the University’s Web-based tools, including Netfiles (Web-based file storage) and the MyU portal. [Note: This ID will not give you access to the restricted portions of the Law School Web site or its intranet until after orientation. Be assured that any information you'll need prior to orientation will be available on the unrestricted Web pages or via other means of communication.]
You will receive information about ordering your fall semester books in your August registration packet. The Bookstore offers an easy option of pre-ordering books (with a credit card); books are then packaged and ready for pick-up during orientation.
Please be aware that assigned books for classes/sections sometimes change
prior to Orientation. Please keep books in a condition to be returned until Orientation or otherwise noted on this website.
You may either select 'Get Books for My Courses' or 'Search Books by Department, Course, or Author'
To 'Get Books for My Courses' you will be prompted to provide your x500 username and password.
To 'Search Books by Department':
1. Select Term: Fall 2008
2. Search By: Department
3. Search For: Type in one of the following-
-LAW 6001 (Contracts)
-LAW 6005 (Torts)
-LAW 6006 (Civil Procedure)
-LAW 6007 (Constitutional Law)

Fall registration packets will be mailed to incoming students at the beginning of August. If you will be unavailable (not receiving mail) after July 31, 2008, please make arrangements with a parent or other family member to complete the forms and return them. For other arrangements, please contact the Law School Registrar at lsserv@umn.edu no later than July 31, 2008.
PLEASE NOTE: The packet will be sent to your "current mailing" address of record in the University One Stop system. This address must be current to prevent delay and disruption to your registration. You can update your current mailing address by visiting www.onestop.umn.edu and clicking on the "Personal Information" link on the right. You will need to activate your U of M email and Internet account in order to make changes via One Stop.
Financial aid award packages are determined in July; important financial aid announcements are sent to your U of M email account. Please read the Financial Aid FAQs.

Housing information was sent in the admissions packet that was mailed to you. The Admissions Office has helpful housing information describing the local neighborhoods and housing resources. Visit the student housing page at www.law.umn.edu/prospective/housing.html.
Be sure to follow all immunization and health insurance requirements. More information about Boynton Health Services at the University of Minnesota and the services covered under the student health plan can be found here: www.bhs.umn.edu. At the time of registration you will be required to provide your own health insurance information or to register for student health coverage.
If you are entering the Law School as a first-year student, DO NOT purchase a laptop of your own in advance. It is mandatory that you purchase the laptop that has been pre-configured for our law students and our curriculum, even if you already own a laptop.
The laptop program provides entering law students with a fully configured laptop that includes all the current hardware and software needed for the Law School curriculum. The laptop is pre-configured with the hard drive storage, processing power, memory, wireless capabilities and software programs needed for the many courses, activities, presentations and research tools at the Law School. To visit the laptop program page, click here.
The laptop cost is incorporated into the first-year tuition as part of the technology fee, and will be spread over two semesters. Laptops are distributed during orientation (they are not available prior to orientation).
Orientations packets are being mailed out in mid-July to all incoming students (first year, transfer, and visiting). The packet contains answers to many of your questions and details about Orientation 2008. The same information is available at this site for your convenience. Orientation is August 26, 2008, for transfer and visiting students; August 27-29, 2008, for first-year (1L) students. Orientation is mandatory for all incoming students.
All new students must submit a final, official transcript from their undergraduate institution, indicating proof of degree. This transcript should be sent directly from the undergraduate institution to the University of Minnesota Law School Admissions Office. The transcript must be received by the Admissions Office by August 25.
New students are required to obtain a University of Minnesota ID Card (called the UCard) prior to orientation. Details for getting your UCard can be found at www1.umn.edu/ucard/. The main UCard Office is located in Coffman Memorial Union—the student union—on the East Bank campus and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
