Juris Doctor Degree Requirements

In order to receive the J.D. degree, a student must:

  • satisfactorily complete 88 semester credits
  • six semesters of residence* as a law student
  • satisfactorily complete required courses
  • be in good academic standing
* student must be registered for 12 or more credits for the semester to count toward residency

Required Courses for Students Entering Fall 2008:

First year courses   
Constitutional Law 3 credits
Contracts 4 credits
Criminal Law 3 credits
Statutory Interpretation, Legal Research & Writing 4 credits
Civil Procedure I 3 credits
Property 4 credits
Torts 4 credits
Civil Procedure II 3 credits
One 3-credit elective from Work of the Lawyer, International Law, Corporations, and Perspectives on the Law
* Class of 2011: There may be changes to the first year schedule. This page will be updated as the changes develop.

Second year courses  
Professional Responsibility 3 credits 
Con Law II required before graduation 3 credits 
Second year writing requirement - Moot Court or Journal staff member 3 credits
Third year courses  
Third year writing requirement -
   seminar, Independent Research paper, journal editor,
   (moot court director)
2 - 4 credits
